예수를 욕먹게하는 자들은 누구?

윌러비교회의 마크목사는 몇 주전 부터 사도행전을 가지고 설교하고 있습니다. 그런데 이 시리즈 강해설교의 첫 설교를 할 때 마이클 하트가 지은 책, The 100: The Most influential persons in history

에서 다음과 같은 대목을 인용하여 소개했습니다.

‘I am neither a Muslim nor a Christian, but on my observation Mohammed has far more influence in the lives of Muslims than Jesus does in the lives of Christians. And if believers simply took more notice of the teachings of Jesus I would have absolutely no hesitation in placing him the most influential person in the history of the world.’

나는 무슬림도 크리스쳔도 아니지만, 내가 본 바로는 모하메드가 무슬림의 삶에 미친 영향이 예수가 그리스도인의 삶에 미친 영향보다 훨씬 크다. 그리고 만약 신자들이 예수의 가르침에 단지 더욱 주의하기만 해도 그를 역사상 가장 영향력있는 인물로 꼽는데 전혀 주저하지 않을 것이다.  

 하트는 또 이렇게 말합니다.

‘This idea of Jesus that we are to love our enemies is surely among the most remarkable and original ethical ideas ever presented. If they were widely followed I would have no hesitation in placing Jesus the most influential person in history. But the truth is that these sayings of Jesus and this one in particular is not widely followed – in fact it is not even generally accepted. Most Christians consider the injunction to love your enemy as at most an ideal which will be realized in some perfect world in the the future, but not as a reasonable guide to conduct in the actual world in which we live.’

우리가 원수를 사랑해야만 한다는 예수의 개념은 이제껏 제시된 모든 윤리적 개념 중에서 가장 뛰어나며 두드러진 것이다. 만약 그들이 널리 따른다면 예수를 역사상 가장 영향력있는 인물로 꼽는데 주저하지 않을 것이다. 그러나 진실은 예수의 이런 말들 특히 이 말은 널리 따르지 않는다. 사실 일반적으로 받아들여지지도 않는다. 대부분의 그리스도인들은 원수를 사랑해야한다는 명령을 우리가 살고 있는 이 실제 세상에서 행하여야 할 합리적인 지침이 아니라 기껏해야 미래의 어느 완전한 세상에서나 실현될 이상으로 생각한다. 

 

이 이야기는 내게 다음과 같은 누가복음의 말씀이 생각나게 했습니다.

[누가복음 19:40] 대답하여 이르시되 내가 너희에게 말하노니 만일 이 사람들이 침묵하면 돌들이 소리 지르리라 하시니라
